Overview of HIPAA Compliance Requirements

The Administrative Simplification provisions of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) will touch most plan sponsors, service providers and participants associated with NWA. HIPAA is an extensive statute that regulates such diverse areas as:

  • Health care fraud and abuse
  • The transfer of benefits when employees change jobs (generally referred to as health insurance portability)
  • The way individually identifiable health information is used, disclosed and protected (a component of the Administrative Simplification provisions)
  • NWA is committed to protecting the privacy and security of individually identifiable health information and to assisting our clients in complying with HIPAA’s Administrative Simplification provisions
